Leadership

What Makes A Great Leader?

Kindness, patience, strength were all the cliche traits I initially thought would catapult my leadership. I was wrong. Individuals do not want or need a kind and indecisive leader. Sometimes, assertiveness and clarity is more appreciated. During my growth as a leader, my path and strategy may have changed but my goals never did. I envisioned a team of young and eager students to srvice the community. The best and efficient way to do so would be to establish relationships with established businesses. As I learned entrepreneurial and management skills I provided them with energetic and fervent adolescents ready to serve.

As a hobby, I also enjoy photography. In photography there must be a balance of the subject and the beautiful landscape. If the subject is too close up, the landscape cannot be appreciated. If  the landscape is emphasized, the subject will be too small and become lost. This is analogous to a leader. A leader must not be the focus of attention but there should be a balance to allow the rest of the team shine; however, the leader must not be too timid and become lost.

“It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.”

Nelson Mandela
